The 2nd Youth Olympic Games (Nanjing Youth Olympic Games) have concluded after a gala closing ceremony at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium on August 28 of 2014. CCTV-1, CCTV-5, CCTV-SPORTS and CCTV NEWS live broadcast this grand closing ceremony.

Just like the brilliant opening ceremony, the closing ceremony presented a big, extravagant and amazing show with colorful lights, bright projection and dazzling fireworks. The large-scaled multimedia floor show turned the centre stadium into a sparkling dream space once again.  
The “scroll” in the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has greatly impressed all of us. At that time, the “scroll” stage only took one third of the entire surface of the site due to the technology limitation, while the floor stage for multimedia performances of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games closing ceremony covered the whole stadium, with over 10,000 square meters (130 m ×78m ) projection areas.  Mr. Sha Xiaolan, the chief A/V designer of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games stated that this closing ceremony has applied lots of state-of-the-art projection technologies and it should be regarded one of the most complicated but successful applications in the world. 

56 High End Systems Axon HD Pro media servers, eight DP 8000 processors and two HOG 4 light consoles were employed to handle the management and control of 112 professional projectors, creating an ever-changing light and shadow space with large, super bright and exquisite scenes, and presented the greatest multimedia floor shows in the world up to now.

The whole projection area was over 10,000 square meters (130 m ×78m), and its projection distance was more than 120 m with 30° of projection depression angle. In order to create a fantastic multimedia floor show to satisfy the directors’ expectation, we had to deal with the challenges in terms of image matching and blending, multi-layer overlapping, synchronous projection and image trapezoid correction.

Single projector has limited luminance and projection coverage, unable to provide required large scale image and high luminance for television transmission. A multiple of projectors are employed to achieve the expected visual effects. This multimedia show featured eight layers and long projection distance, which set high demands on image processing and accuracy. The design team used the built-in correction function in projectors to correct and overlap projection images, then trim it with the multi-point calibration of Axon HD Pro media server, and move the images of each grid line at pixel level.

Because the large scale multi-media performance system was comprised of 112 projectors and 56 multi media servers. The operation of servers should keep synchronous with that of projectors without any visible delay. Axon HD Pro was configured with state-of-art computer hardware processing modules and software, and featured optical fiber transmission, able to perfectly satisfy the designers’ expectation.

The depression angle of projection reached 30 degrees, making trapezoid badly deformed. In addition, it was designed in a face-to-face projection layout; therefore, the trapezoid calibration was regarded as another major challenge.
